Surface Water Management Area: Diamantina River (Qld)
Introduction
The Diamantina SWMA has a catchment area of 122076 sq km and is located in an arid region in south west Queensland.
The mean annual rainfall for the catchment for the 50 year period 1920 to 1969 varies between 125mm to 400mm across the cachment.
The main streams in this SWMA are shallow and braided. During floods the streams can be many kilometers wide.
The major towns in the Diamantina River Catchment are Winton (395 mm rain/yr) and Birdsville (165 mm rain/yr). Significant water is extracted from this SWMA by water harvesting.

This SWMA is in an isolated area with little or no development. Rainfall is distinctly seasonal and extremely variable on an annual basis. Significant use is made of groundwater rather that surface water in this SWMA. There is little demand water in this catchment due to its isolation and low population.
