Groundwater Management Unit: Upper Hodgson Creek

Introduction

Hodgson Creek is a tributary of the Condamine River System. The Upper Hodgson Creek Groundwater Management Unit (GMU) is situated in the Condamine River Basin (4223) west of the Great Dividing Range. The GMU includes parts of the Shires of Cambooya and Jondaryan and covers an area of approximately 184 sq km. The township of Cambooya is located within the GMU boundary. The GMU is drained in a westerly direction into the condamine River via the Hodgson Creek and its tributary streams.

The groundwater resources of the fractured and vesicular rock aquifers within the Upper Hodgson Creek GMU provide suitable supplies of water for commercial, irrigational, stock and domestic purposes. Bore yields range between 5 and 50 l/s. Groundwater is of good quality. The Cambooya Shire Council extracts groundwater for town water supplies.

Groundwater development has increased rapidly over the last 30 years. The current trend for groundwater consumption in the GMU is an increase in small crop farming partly attributed to small crop farmers moving from failing water supplies and degrading water quality of the Lockyer Valley to the Upper Hodgson Creek area. The higher water requirements of small crop farming, the development of rural residential sub-divisions and increasing populations in Cambooya and Wyreema are the main contributors to the increased demand for groundwater supplies.

The Upper Hodgson Creek GMU experiences a subtropical climate with an average annual rainfall of 800 mm. Approximately 60 % of annual rainfall occurs between the months of November and March, inclusive.
