Groundwater Management Unit: Swan Creek Alluvium

Introduction

Swan Creek is a tributary of the Upper Condamine River System and is located along the eastern margin of the Condamine Basin (4223), west of the Great Dividing Range. The Swan Creek Alluvium Groundwater Management Unit (GMU) is located within the Warwick Shire. It covers an area of approximately 97 sq km. The township of Yangan is located in the centre of the GMU with the town of Warwick due west of the GMU boundary. Swan Creek drains the GMU in a westerly direction into the Upper Condamine River system.

The Swan Creek Alluvial groundwater system is fully developed. The resource is currently overallocated and abstraction is estimated to be close to the sustainable yield.

The majority of abstracted groundwater is used for irrigation. Groundwater is of good quality and is suitable for domestic, stockwatering purposes and the irrigation of low to high salt tolerant crops. The township of Yangan depends on the Swan Creek Alluvium groundwater as the town water supply for purposes other than human consumption. Along the alluvial margins, groundwater quality deteriorates and is suitable for more high salt tolerant crops. The deterioration is due to upward leakage of the underlying sandstones within the Walloon Coal Measures.

The Swan Creek Alluvium GMU experiences a subtropical climate with an average annual rainfall of 705 mm. Approximately 67% of rainfall occurs between the months of October and March, inclusive.
