Groundwater Management Unit: Myall / Moola Creek North

Introduction

Myall and Moola Creeks are tributaries of the Upper Condamine River System and are located along the eastern margin of the Condamine Basin (4223), west of the Great Dividing Range. The Myall/Moola Creek Groundwater Management Unit (GMU) includes parts of the Shires of Wambo and Dalby. It extends over an area of approximately 360 sq km. The town of Dalby is located in the west of the GMU with the town of Toowoomba to the south-east of the GMU boundary. The Myall/Moola Creek North GMU is drained in a south-westerly direction by the Myall and Moola Creeks into the Upper Condamine River.

The GMU consists of multiple aquifers of varying groundwater quality. Groundwater extracted from the aquifers is used predominantly for the irrigation of grain and fodder crops. Other uses include stock and domestic purposes as well as the supply of town water to Kaimkillenbun in the centre of the GMU.

Groundwater quality is highly variable throughout the GMU. In the alluvial aquifers upstream of Kaimkillenbun, groundwater is suitable for domestic and drinking puposes. Elsewhere in the GMU, groundwater is higher in salinity and hardness and is consequently unsuitable or marginal for domestic and drinking purposes.

The Myall/Moola Creek North GMU experiences a temperate climate with an average 670 mm of rain a year. Approximately 50% of rainfall occurs between November and February, inclusive.
