Groundwater Management Unit: Lower Oakey Creek Alluvium

Introduction

Oakey Creek is a tributary of the Condamine River System located along the eastern margin of the Condamine Basin (4223), west of the Great Dividing Range. The Lower Oakey Creek Alluvium Groundwater Management Unit (GMU) covers an area of approximately 455 sq km including the townships of Jondaryan and Bowenville. The Oakey Creek drains in a westerly direction into the Condamine River System. The GMU is located within the local authority areas of Jondaryan.

The groundwater resource of the GMU is of significance to the local economy and has rapidly developed in the last twenty years as a source of irrigation and stock intensive water supplies. Cultivation of land for agriculture within the GMU is widespread. Crops grown in the area include grains, oilseeds and cotton. The discontinuous nature of the alluvial deposits in this GMU has tended to restrict large scale developments from utilising groundwater.

Generally, water quality throughout the GMU is variable with groundwater salinity being of marginal to brackish quality with the marginal supplies being suitable for the irrigation of all medium and high salt tolerant crops. There are isolated bores with high levels of nitrates which may make supplies unsuitable for human consumption.

The Lower Oakey Creek Alluvium GMU experiences a temperate and sub-humid climate. The township of Jondaryan receives an average annual rainfall of 632 mm with 50 % of the average annual rainfall occurring between the months of November and February, inclusive.
