Groundwater Management Unit: Dalrymple Creek Alluvium

Introduction

Dalrymple Creek is a tributary of the Upper Condamine River System and is located along the eastern margin of the Condamine Basin (4223) west of the Great Dividing Range. The Dalrymple Creek Alluvial Groundwater Management Unit (GMU) is located within the Warwick Shire and includes all or part of the Parishes of Allora, Dalrymple, Goomburra, Kings Creek, Leslie, and North Toolburra. The GMU covers an area of approximately 260 sq km including the township of Allora, which is situated in the centre of the GMU. Dalrymple Creek is the principal drainage system in the area and its tributary streams include the North Branch of Dalrymple Creek, Banks Creek and the Licking Holes Drainage System.

Rapid development throughout the GMU during the 1980s and 1990s has resulted in the groundwater resource approaching its optimal level of development. Further increases in development will lead to system unreliability and possible failures in the near future. The majority of groundwater extracted from the GMU is used for irrigation supplies. Other uses include town water supplies to Allora, stock and domestic supplies and dairying. Groundwater is of good quality and suitable for most purposes.

The Dalrymple Creek Alluvial GMU experiences a subtropical climate with an average annual rainfall of 713mm. Approximately 67% of rainfall occurs between the months of October and March, inclusive.
