Groundwater Management Unit: Queanbeyan and Molonglo

Introduction

The groundwater resource characteristics for the Queanbeyan and Molonglo groundwater managment unit are presented below. This includes technical detail on aquifer properties and water level change for key monitoring bores.

What is the character of Queanbeyan and Molonglo's groundwater resource?

Vital Statistics:

Area1,513 km2
Total Water Allocated3,300 ML/yr
Total Water Used950 ML/yr
Average Salinity350 mg/L
Sustainable Yield38,250 ML/yr
Depth to top of aquifer90 m

Aquifer Description:

Method used for determining sustainable yield:

The groundwater extraction regime, mesured over a specified planning time frame, that allows acceptable levels of stress and protects the higher value uses associated with the total resources. The definition is framed around an extraction regime not an extraction volume. Sustainable yield based on average annual recharge which is 38.25 GL/Year. Recharge occurs mainly from infilration from rainfall and to a minor extent from the rivers over areas of the A3. <\p>

Are groundwater levels changing?

Technical information on the key groundwater bores and monitoring stations is presented below, including hydrographs where available. Link to a discussion on groundwater levels and trends at a State level as it relates to dryland salinity.
