DERWENT RIVER
Assessment Of River Condition
The Derwent River Basin covers approximately 8,800 square kilometres in south east and central Tasmania. The Derwent River, and a number of its main tributaries, have been dammed and diverted in over 20 storages for the generation of hydro-electricity. The estimated average annual rainfall for the catchment is variable, ranging from around 500 mm up to 1200 mm in the mountainous areas of the upper catchment. Topography for the basin ranges from gently undulating agricultural land to the highland peaks and plateaus of the Central Plateau. The major land uses are agriculture and forestry, with National Parks and other wilderness reservations in highland regions of the catchment.
The Derwent River Basin (304) ARCE was moderately modified and the ARCB was significantly impaired. The basin condition was moderately modified based on the hydrological disturbance index, moderately modified based on the catchment disturbance index, moderately modified based on the habitat index and moderately modified based on the nutrient and suspended load index.
