MTCHELL RIVER (QLD)
Assessment Of River Condition
The Mitchell River Basin has an area of 73230 sq km and is located in North Queensland. The eastern border of the catchment runs in a north-south direction just inland of Mareeba, along the Great Dividing Range. Major tributaries of the Mitchell River are the Palmer, Walsh, Lynd and Tate Rivers. The annual average rainfall for this region varies from 750 to 800mm across the catchment. The major storage in the area is Southedge Dam, located on the Mitchell River. At full supply level the storage has a capacity of 129000ML and covers an area of 3290ha. There are very few settlements in the Mitchell River Basin. The only two urban areas are those of Dimbulah (35km south-west of Mareeba) and Chillagoe (60km west of Dimbulah).
The Mitchell River (QLD) Basin (919) ARCE was largely unmodified and the ARCB was non-assessed. The basin condition was largely unmodified based on the hydrological disturbance index, moderately modified based on the catchment disturbance index, largely unmodified based on the habitat index and non-assessed by the nutrient and suspended load index.
