DAINTREE RIVER

Assessment Of River Condition

The Daintree River Basin occupies an area of 2192 sq km and is situated in tropical far north Queensland. The two main rivers in the catchment are the Bloomfield River and the Daintree River. These rivers originate in the Great Dividing range in the west before flowing in an easterly direction and terminating at the Coral Sea. The mean annual rainfall for the 50 year period 1920 to 1969 varies between 2000mm and 3400 mm. The major population centre in the Basin is Daintree. The topography is hilly to mountainous with vegetation consisting of rainforest. Much of the catchment is part of a World Heritage area.

The Daintree River Basin (108) ARCE was largely unmodified and the ARCB was in reference condition. The basin condition was largely unmodified based on the hydrological disturbance index, largely unmodified based on the catchment disturbance index, largely unmodified based on the habitat index and moderately modified based on the nutrient and suspended load index.

The appropriate State agencies have reviewed this information and the following text is their comments and corrections.

The Queensland river condition workshop expert panel assessed the Daintree River Basin as having catchment hydrology, water quality and river/floodplain ecology as having undergone minimal change from natural.
