Introduction

Sydney Statistical Division represents only 3 percent of the total area of the State, but contains 62 percent of the population at 6 August 1996, and 71 percent of the State's manufacturing establishments.

The Division consists of the Cumberland Plain. To the north of the plain, the Division includes the moderately elevated Hornsby Plateau and, beyond the Hawkesbury River, the coastal lowland plains containing Gosford and Wyong. To the north-west, north, and south-west of the Cumberland Plain, the Division comprises the Blue Mountains and other associated ranges. The southern part of the Division is mainly composed of the moderately elevated Woronora Plateau. The region has a warm, humid climate, except for the higher parts of the mountain ranges where temperatures are cooler, with heaviest rainfall normally occurring in summer and autumn. Rainfall is markedly irregular and declines from east to west. Sydney is the focal point of the State's rail, road, and air services. It also provides port facilities for overseas, interstate and intrastate shipping. It is the seat of public administration

Seventeen per cent of tourist accommodation establishments in NSW at the end of June 1996 were located in this division, generating 62 percent of NSW takings for the June quarter 1996. South Sydney(C) and Sydney(C) were the most significant contributors.

Sydney produced 40.56 percent of the value of eggs in NSW and 7.8% of the value of citrus fruit during 1994-95. These and other agricultural activities are conducted mainly in the outlying areas of the Division such as Blacktown(C), Camden(M), Gosford(C), Liverpool(C), Penrith(C) and Wollondilly(C).

The figures reported here are a subset of the Agricultural Census data from 1982/1983 to 1996/1997 published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, AgStats). The data has been analysed by the Bureau of Rural Sciences using a consistent geographic base. Further information about the data is available from the Australian Spatial Data Directory

Further information

Please Note: Not all the selected data items are available for every year or for every statistical region.

The figures reported here are a subset of the Agricultural Census data from 1982/1983 to 1996/1997 published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, AgStats). The data have been analysed by Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia to report them using a consistent geographic base. Further information about the data is available through the Australian Spatial Data Directory.

The subset includes 436 data items for plant production and 40 data items for livestock which were commonly available in the AgStats database over the 15 year period and each year for respondents having an Estimated Value of Agricultural Operations (EVAO) above the cut-off of $22,500.

The data have been concorded by bringing data collected using different geographies to a consistent geographic base, being Version 2.6 Statistical Local Area (SLA) boundaries (ABS, 1996) and using the non-agricultural lands mask from the National Land and Water Resources Audit's National Landuse Map (1996/1997).
