Richmond-Tweed (SD)

Location map for SD: 120

Introduction

Richmond-Tweed Statistical Division covers 1 percent of the State, and contains 3.36 percent of the population at 6 August 1996.

The Division consists of two major coastal river basins (of the Richmond and Tweed Rivers) and a river valley (of the upper Clarence River). It is enclosed on the north by the rugged McPherson Range, on the west by the more easterly extensions of the New England plateau, and on the south by the less rugged Richmond Range. The Richmond Range extends northerly into the Divisions and separates the river valley from the coastal basins. The climate of the region is humid sub-tropical. The rainfall varies in intensity and occasional severe flooding occurs. The area has a rail and a road system of communications cutting the river system at right angles, and a highway linking the coast to the hinterland.

Total value of building jobs approved in the Division in 1995-96 amounted to $261.5 million. Of this amount, Tweed(A) accounted for 29 percent, followed by Ballina(A) with 22 percent, Lismore (C) with 17 percent, and Byron(A) with 14 percent.

Sugar-cane was grown over 11,104 hectares during 1994-95 representing 68 per cent of the State total. Most of this was grown in Tweed(A) Part B with 39 per cent of the Division total, followed by Ballina(A) with 28 percent. The area grown to bananas at 1,481 hectares represents 46 percent of the State total and of this 57 percent were located in Tweed(A).

The figures reported here are a subset of the Agricultural Census data from 1982/1983 to 1996/1997 published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, AgStats). The data has been analysed by the Bureau of Rural Sciences using a consistent geographic base. Further information about the data is available from the Australian Spatial Data Directory

Further information

Please Note: Not all the selected data items are available for every year or for every statistical region.

The figures reported here are a subset of the Agricultural Census data from 1982/1983 to 1996/1997 published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, AgStats). The data have been analysed by Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia to report them using a consistent geographic base. Further information about the data is available through the Australian Spatial Data Directory.

The subset includes 436 data items for plant production and 40 data items for livestock which were commonly available in the AgStats database over the 15 year period and each year for respondents having an Estimated Value of Agricultural Operations (EVAO) above the cut-off of $22,500.

The data have been concorded by bringing data collected using different geographies to a consistent geographic base, being Version 2.6 Statistical Local Area (SLA) boundaries (ABS, 1996) and using the non-agricultural lands mask from the National Land and Water Resources Audit's National Landuse Map (1996/1997).
