Illawarra (SD)

Introduction
Illawarra Statistical Division covers 1 per cent of the State and contained 5.97 percent of the population at 6 August 1996. The most populated Local Government Area was Wollongong (C), with 49 per cent of the population of the Division.
The coastal portion of the Division consists of a discontinuous coastal plain, where a series of river valleys (Minnamurra and Shoalhaven) alternate with spurs of more elevated land extending eastwards from the tablelands. To the west of this coastal plain is a long escarpment which gives way to exceedingly rugged terrain in the Shoalhaven area, and the land in the north-western part of the Division consists of undulating tablelands. The climate is generally of the warm, humid type, with heaviest rainfall occurring in summer and autumn.
Rail communication in the Division comprises the Illawarra Line extending through the coastal belt and terminating at Nowra; the main southern line passing through Bowral; and a connecting link (Unanderra-Moss Vale), which is used mainly for goods traffic. Highway communication follows a similar pattern with a coastal road, a tablelands road, and several roads linking the Bowral area with the Illawarra Plains districts.
Wollongong (C) had the highest value of building jobs approved in 1995-96 followed by Shoalhaven (C). These two areas represent a combined 66 percent of the total value of building jobs approved in the Division.
Agricultural activities in 1994-95 was conducted mainly in Wingecarribee(A) (44.25%) and Shoalhaven(C) (36.12%). These two areas together represented 80.37 percent of establishments with agricultural activity in the Division.
The Division had 8.3 percent of the State total tourist accommodation establishments at the end of June 1996..
The figures reported here are a subset of the Agricultural Census data from 1982/1983 to 1996/1997 published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, AgStats). The data has been analysed by the Bureau of Rural Sciences using a consistent geographic base. Further information about the data is available from the Australian Spatial Data Directory

Further information
Please Note: Not all the selected data items are available for every year or for every statistical region.
The figures reported here are a subset of the Agricultural Census data from 1982/1983 to 1996/1997 published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, AgStats). The data have been analysed by Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia to report them using a consistent geographic base. Further information about the data is available through the Australian Spatial Data Directory.
The subset includes 436 data items for plant production and 40 data items for livestock which were commonly available in the AgStats database over the 15 year period and each year for respondents having an Estimated Value of Agricultural Operations (EVAO) above the cut-off of $22,500.
The data have been concorded by bringing data collected using different geographies to a consistent geographic base, being Version 2.6 Statistical Local Area (SLA) boundaries (ABS, 1996) and using the non-agricultural lands mask from the National Land and Water Resources Audit's National Landuse Map (1996/1997).
