Agriculture - National Horticulture Industry Profiles - Melons
Melons
Rock melons and watermelons are the main melon crops grown in Australia. They account for 96% of the total value for melons in 1996/97. With a gross value of production of $91 m, melons represented about 2% of the total gross value of Australian horticulture in 1996/97.
Major producing areas
Melons need warm conditions for optimum growth, and 60% of total Australian production comes from Queensland with a further 15% in the Ord River region of Western Australia. They are also grown as summer crops in irrigation areas of New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.

Production, production trends and exportsMelon production has steadily increased since 1994/95. However, in the five years to 1998/99 melon exports have trended downwards and the value of melon exports in 1998/99 was close to $12 m. Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore remain the three major export destinations, accounting for around 90% of total melon exports. While exports to New Zealand have remained relatively constant, exports to Hong Kong and Singapore fell by 49% and 40% respectively. |
