What land and water resources are invested in horticulture production in the Temperate Slopes and Plains?

The eastern parts of this region are predominantly (approximately 70?warm, persistently dry, grassland with temperate areas that exhibit no dry season. The western parts of this region are predominantly temperate with distinctly dry, warm to hot summers with subtropical and grassland areas in the north-west. Average annual rainfall in this region varies from 200 mm in the northern, inland areas to more than 600 mm toward the coast. Average annual temperatures in this region range from a minimum of 6°C and a maximum of 18°C in the south-east to a minimum of 12°C and a maximum of 27°C in the north-west.

In this region, horticulture product is grown on 78,486 hectares of land. This production is comprised of 30,550 hectares of annual and 47,936 hectares of perennial. There are approximately 32,540 hectares of irrigated vegetable crops (annual) and 35,653 hectares of irrigated fruit crops (perennial) in this region.

What environmental challenges face the horticulture industry in the Temperate Slopes and Plains?
