Data reported in Australia's Resources Online is accessed directly from the data custodians using interoperable technologies. Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standard web map services (WMS) and web feature services (WFS) are published by custodians using defined XML schemas.

The data custodian is the authoritative source of information on a topic for a jurisdiction, usually a State/Territory agency.

The schemas used in ARO are developed and agreed by the community of interest, often lead by a National Coordinating Committee, and use NRML (Natural Resource Modelling Language).
